Middletown's Conservation Commission is a planning agency with an emphasis on environmental quality.
The Conservation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency.
The primary purpose of the Conservation Commission is to conduct research into the utilization of land areas in the municipality and provide advisory opinions to other commissions. To this end the Commission may prepare and distribute maps, charts, books and plans and may inventory natural resources and formulate watershed management plans. In addition, the Commission must index all open space areas and wetlands, monitoring their use and overseeing their development. With approval, the Commission may acquire property and easements in the name of the municipality and establish rules and regulations concerning the use of these properties. The Commission may be delegated the power to manage parks and open space as well as receive gifts, in the name of the municipality, for their purposes. The members of the Conservation Commission are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council.
The Conservation Commission meets the second Thursday of the month in the Municipal Building. The agenda is available the Friday prior to each meeting.
